Woke up today...

...With an email from Brown in my inbox. Feels good man.

Even better was this part: "Turns out my PayPal Account got limited. Now obviously it was an anonymous one, so not only did I not get the emails, but I couldn't pay for March's invoice when I checked it a few days ago. Yes, I had no idea I hadn't paid February's invoice until a few day's ago."

If you don't know what that means: This whole problem WAS payment related, apparently something happened to his Paypal account (even though he said he was paying with his credit card before, but I digress ಠ_ಠ) and that caused Underhost to not be paid. This was not DMCA related. We're all not going to prison. Yet.

Hope to see you soon! Domain name may change. I'm expressing my opinions on how much I dislike .coms.

I keep forgetting to sign these, so from now on just assume it's me if it's missing a signature;

  3. Get a domain that isn't .com .net or .org as the US registrars have a monopoly on them. You don't want to be subject to seizure.

    1. ICE once stated any domain registrar owned by the US company Verisign, they can remove from the Internet. This includes .com, .org and .net.

    2. Without knowing who owns/holds the rights to, I think I am partial to the .ME myself. It seems to work for Demonoid and TPB so that makes me think it might be a safe alternative.

    3. The Pirate Bay uses se?

Also, it's owned by some company called doMEn in Montenegro. doMEn is apparently partially owned by Godaddy.

    2. The back up was made on February 11th, so we actually aren't losing much of anything.

After the site is restored I still need to go through the last half of those 12000 users, so the site will probably be off for at least a week after we get it back up and running (I'll put on maintenance mode or whatever) ಠ_ಠ

    1. I have a membership at netload and rapidshare, so pick one of those two. :)

      Delete
    2. I'm honestly considering unbanning Oron.

It's actually the fastest one nowadays...

      Delete
    3. I used to hate Oron. Slow, cancelled downloads midway through, counter resetting again and again, then...something happened, it became more dependable with better speeds and no more resets on the counter. There's still a loooong wait period between downloads, but that's acceptable as long as you can acutally download at a decent speed and get the file all the way done. For some reason, Oron still seems a bit creepy or shady, I guess because of past behavior and some shady users who chose it as a sole upload/cash making source. I no longer avoid Oron links though. Some times, that's the best choice. Surprisingly, depositfiles is not as reliable as Oron now. Go figure.

      Delete
    4. Inorite? Getting like 200+kbps at Oron and UNDER 30 at DepositFiles. ಠ_ಠ

Also, Oron stopped its affiliate program didn't it? Or at least my account doesn't seem to have an affiliate box anymore.

      Delete
  36. I am kind of inclined (at least for the beginning reintroduction of the site to get it back up and going) to not ban any site since some work better than others for different locations. Instead maybe require at least 2 or 3 different links minimum be available. Or something like that.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, I think we should still keep the sites that have blocked whole countries (IE, The United States of America) from downloading from them.

      Delete
  37. Ban em, if they block whole countries then why support that kind of selective censorship by visiting the site and giving them advertising money when someone who doesn't know that they are offline for the US clicks on em.

    Mykeyfinn

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They don't censor the countries because they hate those countries, they do it because operating in those countries can land you in jail as a result of the music/movie industry having a powerful and wealthy lobby with far too much political influence.

If anything I applaud the fact that these companies are making a statement about the dangerous political climate of the US.

      Delete
    2. But there's a difference between not having servers in the country (which was the case for Megaupload) and denying people not involved in the matter access entirely.

It's like we're regressed back to segregation.

      Delete
    3. Also, users in the US can still purchase premium accounts (which they then cannot use at all) so technically it's a scam too.

      Delete
  38. Forgive me as I am not overly Tech savy....but does this mean that all of our accounts will transfer over if we change the domain? Or will we have to sign up again? Sorry if its a stupid question

    1. That's the point of a database backup.

Assuming your account isn't pruned of course.

      Delete
    2. ahhhh okay. I wouldn't think i would be (im assuming so anyway) I'm not a VIP but i've posted files and have at least over 100 posts...not that thats a huge amount lol but its nice to know i don't have to re-register (hope so anyway)

      Delete
    3. If you've posted material then you're good.

Also, I only went up to people with less than 16 posts anyway.

      Delete
  39. What's the point to deleting any of the accounts exactly? If you just want to get rid of inactive members pretty sure you can set that up on the forum to deactivate accounts if the don't log in between X amount of time.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. PhpBB 3 has no option for that.

Also, it's based on posting, not logging in. Because: >Implying those 12000 users don't log in every day

      umadbro?

And I want to delete them, not deactivate them. Brown deactivating all of those accounts way back when instead of deleting them is partially what caused all of this mess (which was caused by me deactivating administration activation, which in turn made everyone who was deactivated automatically activated for no reason whatsofuckingever). If he had originally deleted them all I'd literally only have less than 300 accounts to go through, but because he didn't I have to go to through 12000.

So, yes, they must be deleted because the "prune inactive user script" is fucking retarded and still informs you for members who've been deactivated already. (How in the flying fuck is a banned/deactivated user supposed to be active anyway, phpBB group? ಠ_ಠ)

And besides, like I said else where, there are special cases where a user won't lose their account. That's something an automated script wouldn't be able to do.

  41. You could also add a forum Icon.

Moderators that are browsing the topics, if they notice for example.

    "[filename] Is broken, please Re-up."
The moderator would change the Icon of the Topic,to something like a Black ! with a Yellow circle, or have the ability to change it to [BROKEN].

If the topic remains [BROKEN] for a time period of let's say 3 months, a moderator would have to Purge it, or somehow it would be auto-purged.
    ----
I noticed most of the links in the later pages were mostly broken, and been that way for quite some time. It's an annoyance, and perhaps a waste of space.

    2. I do like the idea of marking topics which are without working links... BUT it would be a lot of work for nothing... I don't think that all topics and links have to be working for ever and if no one is interested, there is no sense in a reup!
If someone wants one the person can request a reup herself. So why should the moderators do that much work?
Furthermore it is good to know that the file was online once and that there is a chance for a reup...
Plus the Request section would be used much more and would end up in a complete mess I guess...

    3. The real problem here is that people who post content aren't in it for the long haul. You can't just upload something then stop caring about it, you should fix it every time it dies.

I used to check my own uploads from time to time to make sure they were still working.

If people actually cared for what they've posted then all of the dead links from when Megaupload, FileServe and Filesonic closed would've been fixed before the site even died...

      Delete
    4. I think it should just be common practice to PM whoever uploaded it in the first place, if you upload a lot of stuff its hard to keep track of everything all the time.

      Delete
    5. Yeah, but there are people who ignore PMs...

      Delete
    6. I also would like it if there were some symbol or list for bad links. Lets say JoeShmoe posts something, and I happen to DL it and save it. Then JoeShmoe fucks off, we never see him again, and his link dies. Then poor ZamZam or Tommy checks the thread, sees that the link has died, and asks for a re-up.

I have the file, but it's unlikely that I'll go back and re-read a thread for a file I downloaded 6 months ago and have pretty much forgotten. If I could see at a glance that the thread has a broken link, I could search my HD, "o i hav dis," and then re-up.

Now as to how this should be implemented -- I don't have a strong opinion. The low-tech method, though, would just be a thread or sticky that is essentially 'Dead Link Du Jour." Ungainly and doesn't scale well, but a possibility.

      Delete
    7. I think like Charliewyoung...
But as long as no one asks for it I don't see the point of reupping.
If someone needs something he/she can always ask!
And KatsukiLovie made up agood point aswell.
No one should be asked to care about all his 50+ uploads. But the uploader should feel respnosible if someone asks for a reup to do one!

      Delete
    8. Also, it's not hard to keep track at all. There was clearly a link to "View Your Topics". If you had clicked that, all of your topics would be displayed and all you had to do was see which had new posts and check those out.

      Delete
    9. I used that button and I reupped if someone asked for it as long as I remember. So there is no problem I guess?!

As a side note, if your account was being deleted you wouldn't be getting re-invited by any of us. You will not be giving any type of "probation period", and sharing reups wouldn't help you anyway. We've already done that and it has NEVER worked. The ONLY exception to this would be delivering (up front) brand new content none of us (IE, the Internet, if Googling gives a result it's not "new") have.

ODP will not come back anytime soon. In fact nobody is working on the return of ODP.

-CN seems to have vanished again
-Hurp is not able and willing to do something on his own (and has no money) - He's strolling around at HypChan now...
-Brown is still gone with the last sign of life already being a month old.

As for your claim of "there's currently nothing going on to restore ODP"... You would be happy to prove that, yes? Clearly you can't make a statement like that without any sort of evidence. The fact that your browser states "this webpage is not available" doesn't prove anything, because no one knows if that domain will even be used anymore.

  64. Erm, where's a good place to dump several CEI vids? ODP's down, and I'm more or less ready to wipe them from my computer - haven't fapped to them in months.

But that's "just 20, 30 $ at year, if everyone spends one dollar we can get it, right?

    1. No, it's only like 15 bucks for a domain name. It's ~$40 a month for hosting. If I only had to pay a domain name I'd be able to do it, but not $500 a year...

    3. Italy is probably not a good place to host in.

Also looks like MYSQL is optional, which is 10 more a year and also isn't even large enough to host ours (the current database is over 160MB, the limit they have is 100MB).

there are no initiatives by any of the former mods or known to the former mods ongoing to restore ODP.
    Right or wrong?

You already admitted you are not doing it, CN does not do it either (educated guess), same for Brown who would not need one month to restore ODP. If he would have started something, he would need CN's help, because of the backup.

    1. How would you know that? Just because no one said anything doesn't mean they aren't.

And, FYI, Brown has been busy for the last half of year. How'd you not notice he wasn't on the website even once in 6 months before it died?

And also, again, it can take months to get your Paypal account unlimited. I had to do it when I got their debit card a year ago, took like a fucking month.

And just because I ain't getting any emails doesn't mean Brown and CN aren't corresponding with each other. They could've just forgot to include me in the to field like what happened with Dark.

  68. Hurp agree, I don't know what's going on, you don't know what's going on. So there's either something going on or not.

The evidence of the obvious is that there's nothing going on, because we don't see anything going on. This is an assumption true, but based on what we see it's a very, very valid one.

Of course I noticed that brown was not active in ODP, but this is diffrent. He knows now ODP is down and he's doing nothing about it. At least nothing we can see.

Don't get me wrong I desperately hoping that ODP will come back, I'm just very pessimistic based on what I see.

I spend 170USD on files since ODP is down. I wouldn't have done that, if I personally would believe it's comming back anytime soon.

As a final word, I have seen this thread is basically about members worring their accounts are lost, totally ignoring that ODP as a whole is lost and maybe not coming back.

Again, I sooo hope that I'll be proved wrong soon!

    1. If they're worried their account is gone, there's a 99.9% chance it is. You should know whether or not your account is in good standing.

Anyway, new post soon. It should (hopefully) have some good news on it. Expect it within a fortnight unless someone trolls me.

That's not right. You should've done that anyway. The last thing we would want is our favorite hypnotists to quit because no one is buying their shit.

  70. The answer seems simple, someone get a website that starts with 'ourdirtypleasure' - every name is avaliable except for .com which expires in SEPTEMBER 2012.

The site could be entered via a password, does someone have the database of users and passwords/email addresses?

Divert it to a blog like this - and just post the stuff you wish to share.

No points rubbish, no 'VIPs', and maybe a couple of mods who can take down any offensive stuff.

Also no 20 page rule book just to share a file most the time the poster has paid for.

Near the end of ODP it got to the point where a lot of the previous posters I contacted would not post due to 'the rules' and having to post stills etc.

The site could be very simple, like hypnochan

All that would be required is say two or three standard 'download' sites we could use.

ODP is clearly not on Browns 'to do' list so we have to accept we are living in hope. Real life is busy for him and he doesnt want to put monies into something that he doesnt see anything back for.

Ive spend about $250 USD on material recently that will all be shared when something suitable goes back online.

One subject that was discussed a lot on ODP was copyright, Metallica can not stop there CDs being downloaded and they have lawyers they pay millions too, so dont think one hypnodomme is going to have the power to get your house raided. Or if you are scared of this - dont download anything illegal. Simple.

Anyway - end of my opinion.

Action is what is needed - without Brown.

    1. I dont see what's stopping you from hosting the site yourself then?
      1) Go to kimsufi.com or kimsufi.co.uk or isgenoeg.nl and rent a dedi for as little as 14 euro's a month.
      2) Throw some apache or whatever webserver you like on there, oh and a sql server ofcourse, postgres/mysql most likely.
      3) Throw some forum software on that bitch!
      4) Give out the location here, only hardcore members come here anyway (that and hypnodommes ofcourse so prepare for them signing up too)
      5) ???
      6) Profit!

    2. I hear that mentioned a lot, that "it got to the point where a lot of the previous posters I contacted would not post due to the rules". I disagree. I read practically every single thread on ODP, and I only ever saw TWO people complain about the rules. And BOTH of them were just copy and pasting URLs from Jerkfix and posting it on ODP.

So, please, enlighten me on these "a lot of previous posters". Cuz I never saw it.

    3. No offense HurpDurp but we both know that's total bullshit.
One other that pops up in my head instantly is the guy behind the cock hero series who posted his content on only 2 sites, one of them being ODP.
He stopped posting his content due to the rules, and seemed quite mad actually.
About 10 people replied in his thread and most of them thought you should give him a break and let him post his links.

Once again no offense but we all know that there's more than 2 people who disagreed about the rules (hell, I even made a thread about it at one point and I never reposted from other sites).

    4. I think str00p is right. Every new rule builds an addtional barrier that prevents someone from sharing. The posters are not paid, they rather give content, they purchased, away for free. We should make this as easy as possible.

I prefer a new file being shares on a crappy hoster or even a torrent over it being not shared at all.

      Delete
    5. I'd like to make clear though, I do support certain rules but I think exceptions should be made for certain posts that are:
      1) Original (homemade) content
      2) Bought/acquired by the user himself and not stolen from randomers on other boards (though this might be hard to prove its in certain cases obvious that it's the same user posting the same file and not someone stealing someone else's content)

andyp from the cockhero series was a perfect example of a person that shouldve gotten an excemption.

    6. Oh and one last thing, I understand (and agree) with t he crappy hoster example but I do not stand behind hosters that force you to install download managers (including spyware) and I am strongly against using torrents.

It's like saying "here, have my ip, I'm downloading this file, have a look at the rest of the swarm for their ip's too and enjoy sending a notice to my ISP". No thanks.

  71. This might be a stupid question and maybe someone asked it before but I haven't seen it in the majority of the posts I've read.

I'm pretty much a lurker on ODP. Comment very rarely and use the thanks button on all posts I partake in. I'm VIP because I donated to ODP back in the day. Does that make it likely for me to still be VIP on the new site or do my lack of adding content prevent that?

    Thanks

    1. Would require too much coding as I couldn't find equivalents for the plugins we use on phpBB for MyBB (most importantly the invitation system plugin).

Also, CN stated he has no intentions of learning how to use MyBB (and no one else showed interest in the topic I made) and I'd personally not like to lose the staff we have as they're quite reliable.

...But shouldn't you know about all of this already?

  78. I want to remind you about a post I made a couple of weeks ago, without any reaction. I would allow to reactivate the comunity without the need for a server!

Ever head of "Retroshare"??? It's a kind of "Friend"-to-"Friend" Darknet-Client. See here: http://retroshare.sourceforge.net/index.html
    (I recommend the portable version!)

    Features:
    •Serverless, encrypted Chat & Filetransfer!
    •Multiple simultaneous downloads / uploads
    •Search Friends
    •Messages <<<!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    •Forums <<<!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    •UPnP / NAT-PMP port forwarding support
    •GnuPG Authentication
    •OpenSSL Encryption
    •Plugins support

We could open a new comunity which is Server independant. Hurp or CN could act as a gatekeeper, based on the former VIP-Member list, they could start to invite mebers via Mail. We could then start an ODP-Retroshare comunity based on the VIPs E-Mail Addresses and grow further from there.

A start would be if Hurp or CN or anyone with access to the e-mails we used during registration, would send his public Retroshare key to the admin/VIP e-mails together with an explanation what to do with it. Once we have everything up and runing with the initial staff, the rest will be easy.

What do you think? Is it worth a try?

    -hmf

  79. really interesting, but for me there is a proxy and i can't modify the NAT rules , so i can't access the retroshare network

btw, this can work only if the pc hosting the files are always on , no ?
i'm not sure: there is a gpg key , but is it a stealth network or only ciphered messages ?
