Guys,
The website is getting modified today and tomorrow. Can't tell you when we'll be back up and running again, but it's about time I got some of these modifications installed and updated the security stuff. Will take a while because I'll be getting some heavy stuff installed... but stay tuned.

Thanks for your effort.
ReplyDeleteNo worries man... thanks for showing your appreciation :-)
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to all of the changes. Keep up the good work. You do an incredible amount of work and sometimes you need to be thanked for it.
ReplyDeleteSo thank you.
I just got a TOOOOOOOOOOOON of emails from the site for PMs and reports from up to several months ago.
ReplyDeleteThe fuck was up with that, Brown?
Also, I think this thing hates my email, since if I use it I can't seem to post a comment.
Thank you for all your time, Brown.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your hard work Brown, looking forward to the changes :)
ReplyDeleteEven though I say the same as some guys before - thanks a lot for your work, it's highly appreciated!

ReplyDeleteteddyboy57 here. Brown, Remember to come up for a breath now and again.. We all appreciate what you doing. Thanks
ReplyDeleteHere's the story so far.
ReplyDeleteThe database has been fully optimized and repaired... however, that's something I can't say about the lot of the code/files.
The idea was to start fresh, but late last night I soon discovered that wasn't possible.
I moved the database to a vanilla server, adding it to a fresh install of phpBB. Completely installed everything cleanly... and I mean completely clean. No bugs. No errors. Nothing.
Downloaded everything and went to upload the files to the current hosts. Problems began. Whenever I'd upload 20GB of a MySQL File, BANG. It would fail. Not because of any configurations (like max execution time, max upload size or anything in php.ini), but because the server wouldn't respond because it kept going down.
Tried to FTP the files, and it would block my IP after I'd done 500... probably as some sort of security measure. Contacted the hosts, doubt I'll get any response. I can't even log into the cP because the hosts website has been down all day.
So, everything was sitting nicely on my desktop. Just uploaded everything to localhost... and the errors came back again. I was getting decoding error messages all the time in Chrome, MySQL Execution errors... the lot.
So, this morning? Back to square one. I've uploaded most of the files this morning... but most of the hard part is done. The Database is squeeky clean, but the files aren't. Because of this, it seriously restricts me being able to do anything. I wanted to attached Thanks to SharePoints... but I can't
Anyway, I promise it will be up tomorrow. The new style works perfectly though, just need to finish installing and configuring a few mods.
As the moderators will know, creating permissions is a pain in the ass... and, unfortunately, will take several hours, and it's something I have to do, otherwise the mods won't be usable for anyone of the forum.
I've had enough for tonight. I stopped working on it about three hours ago because I just got annoyed. Wrote down everything on a piece of paper what I need to do, took one look at it... and thought fuck this, I'm going to do this tomorrow.
Sorry guys, but I swear it will be up tomorrow. Thought I'd also mention, ODP will be opening its doors back up again until we reach 10,000 members... something I should of done. I want to be able to hit this milestone before anything... the 9,000 at the bottom gets on my nerves!
Much love.

ReplyDeleteThanks Brown,
No worries, you're the one whose had to put in all the hard work.
It takes as long as it takes, We're just grateful for all the effort you're putting in to get it back up and running.
Wow. That certainly sounds annoying like hell. Thanks for keeping us up to date here, I really appreciate that. Also take the time you need and don't sweat it.
ReplyDeletebrown2318, sounds like you have been way busy with this one. Take the night to let yourself unwind. Hoist a few of your favorite adult beverages and just enjoy the downtime.
ReplyDeleteWhen its up... they will come (cum) }:)
Most upgrades like this usually take a week or more and that's by pros so Do what you gotta do to get it done right the first time, nothing sucks more than having to redo it piecemeal and you've got the time we wont dissapear just cause its down one day longer than expected.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update Brown, sorry to hear things haven't gone very smoothly!
ReplyDeleteI know how things like this can go having done a fair bit of server admin work in the past.
Just a thought, if you have SSH access to the server, as if you did you could zip (or tar.gz) the files and extract them on the server.
As for the database, that's a bit more tricky - but you could put it in a public directory on the old server and wget it to the new one, then use the MySQL CLI to import it.
If you don't have SSH access things become a hell of a lot more tricky of course.
Anyhow, don't forget to take some time to sit back and relax! It is the weekend after all!
Thanks for all your hard work - as others have said, take your time and don't worry about it.
Cheers,
~Cn

ReplyDeleteThis is what happens when you start writing a sentence, change your mind write something else and do not check through what you wrote properly :P
Heh, I've worked out a system to evaluate the odds of a successful update on any given day. It involves some complicated calculations to determine some strange new time keeping system with 12 extra hours on the clock and a far away time zone. Based on the time stamps posted to this blog, it seems the admin likes to call it a night shortly after 18 O'clock GMT. Right now, it's shortly after 16 O'clock GMT. That means, if the site is not up in roughly 2 hours, it's probably best to hold off on the refresh button until tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try holding my breath for the next two hours, and maybe that will make the all mighty server happy again. OH! Here's what we try at the office when we have computer troubles:
1. Try again/Refresh software/click things.
2. If that doesn't work, restart computer, spin around in your chair three times, and throw salt over your left shoulder. Re-load software and try again/refresh software/click things.
3. If that doesn't work, call help desk, wait on hold for 15 minutes, talk to guy who wants to kill himself A.K.A. the Great Shaman, he will write you a "ticket," which is usually a bad thing in this society, but somehow this one is supposed to be good, and advise further ritual to chase away the computer gremlins.
4. If that doesn't work.... who cares? It's time to go home, by now! It's just your fucking work computer anyway, that's what they get for locking out your privileges!
5. Come back the next day and repeat. Collect pay check on Friday.
We call it progress. Hope the next two hours are kinder to you, thanks for all the work!
That was interesting... however, you're going to have to redo the calculations because the timestamps on the comments aren't GMT. For example, it's 19:29 BST now, which would make it 18:29 GMT... what does the timestamp on the comments say?
ReplyDeleteYou know when it's GMT because it says GMT after it (I manually do it). I would have a go at editing your algorithm, but you've lost me!
As for the update, we should be up in less than 5 hours times... I'll continue soon after my Sunday Roast (which is in about 10 minutes).
Nearly there!
I was referring to the timestamps on http://ourdirtypleasure.com/, the temporary page. It seems like you post your final thoughts for the day at around 18:30, which is right about now. Glad to hear I was wrong though!
ReplyDelete@Anonymous It's almost 20:30 BST now (19:30 GMT), not 18:30.
ReplyDeleteCheers for the update Brown. Looking forward to seeing everything.
We'll be up soon, very soon... it shouldn't be too long.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Anonymous, the thoughts on the temporary page are dated... I last updated it 2 days ago. Thought it'd be better to update it here seen as everyone comes here anyway and no FTP queuing is necessary.
Hurr Durr ;-)
I was rounding down... :P
ReplyDelete> Hurr Durr
ReplyDeletenou. >:0
@HurpDurp
ReplyDeleteYyeeehhhhh alright... of course not.
Anyway, I'm literally nearly there. It's nearly 2 in the morning, and I'm not going to bed until it's done.
Just need to post two more a couple more help topics... I've decided to sort out VIP Wednesday instead.

ReplyDeleteGood work Brown and HurpDurp.
I'd say thanks but thank you posts are banned. =)
Look forward to having the site back.

ReplyDeleteI... I didn't do anything though.
